What Do You Need To Install A VoIP Phone System?

Blog

Have you been considering making the switch from your existing PBX phone system to VoIP? If so, you're likely wondering what is involved with switching over to an entire different phone system. Here are a few things you'll need to have to make it work.

Internet Networking

The biggest difference between PBX and VoIP phone systems is that all of your existing telephone wiring is not going to work for VoIP. Every single phone needs to be connected to an ethernet cable to have a direct connection to the Internet. This can require significantly upgrading your Internet network at your office since you'll need a lot more CAT5 wires to run to every workstation and likely need a network switch to plug all of those devices in.

You may be able to use networking that is in place if you have hardwired computers currently by placing a switch at each workstation. You'll essentially be putting the equivalent of a power strip for the Internet at each workstation so that you can get the Internet to the phones for the best connection possible.

New Hardware

All of your old phones are not going to work with your previous PBX phone system. This is going to require that you make some upgrades to all the hardware at every desk. Some VoIP services give you the option to lease phones, but there can be significant cost savings over time by purchasing the hardware directly instead.

The benefits of having new hardware is that you are going to be opened up to a world of new phone features throughout your office. Directories that are easy to navigate with no more extension numbers to memorize, visual voicemail messages that you can read instead of listen to, the ability to record phone calls and play them back later, and other features that are exclusive to VoIP phones.

Smartphone App

Many VoIP services also allow you to download an app to your smartphone that allows you to simulate many features of your desktop phone while you are out of the office. One of the nicest features is the ability to make phone calls on your cell phone that come from the office phone number. No more worrying about making a call from your cell phone and having a client know your cell phone number forever.
